Varna dolphinarium to be renovated
Varna dolphinarium will be renovated after the summer season ends, the owner and regional manager of Festa Holding AD Vassil Vassilev said as quoted by Bulgarian-language Dnevnik daily on August 11. Coincidentally, this date also marks the 24th birthday of the dolphinarium.
Vassilev also plans to construct a new swimming pool for the mammals. He is investing some of his own money in the project but is waiting for Varna municipality to give a permit for the renovation. He says that repairs may start in autumn 2008 and finish by the beginning of summer 2009.
The first part of the plan involves constructing a new swimming pool to offer temporary accommodation for the five dolphins while repairs are in progress. The current swimming pool will then undergo substantial repairs to its lining and seating arrangements.
Varna dolphinarium, which is a unique feature the Balkan Peninsula, receives 200 000 people annually. Three of the dolphins arrived from Cuba many years ago. The other two dolphins were born in Varna. The youngest dolphin is four years old.
